A dental bridge can replace one tooth or several teeth. Dentures in dental bridges look and function like real teeth. There are many options to fill the missing, gap in a smile.

One option is a crown treatment, which is a false tooth that is inserted into a small portion of the real tooth. In the treatment of missing teeth, a crown alone is not sufficient as a treatment, instead a dental bridge may be a good choice.

The term “bridge” refers to a structure containing one or more false teeth. The structure is usually fixed in place with one or more crowns on either side of the oral cavity. For example, if a person loses several front teeth due to injury or decay, the doctor may use a bridge to fill the gap.

The person may not want to have a gap in their teeth, for example, after a tooth extraction, for example because they need teeth in the chewing area or because of cosmetic concerns.

For some people, a permanent dental implant is an alternative to a bridge. Dental implants are false teeth that dentists surgically place into the bone in the mouth. Dentists recommend implants to help secure a bridge, especially if many teeth are missing.

In which cases is a dental bridge needed?

A dental bridge can help a person feel more comfortable with their smile. It can also enable them to chew normally.

When a person loses one or more teeth, they may experience pain or difficulty eating during feeding and biting actions. These complications are prevented by the treatment of missing teeth.

A person may need a bridge if:

Extraction of a decayed tooth or tooth loss
Tooth loss due to dental trauma.
If the tooth is irreversible due to caries and root canal treatment cannot be applied.

Types of Dental Bridges

Dentists use several types of bridges:

The Traditional Bridge consists of two crowns (sometimes called abutments) that fix the false tooth or teeth. This is the most popular type of bridge. can be fixed or removed.

A tooth-supported Bridge requires only one crown for support. This involves a less intensive procedure and may be a good option for people who don’t want to damage healthy teeth. In this type of bridge, the intact teeth on both sides of the missing or extracted tooth are thinned a little and used as a support foot for the bridge. The prostheses fixed on these feet are extremely useful and aesthetically successful.

This bridge, also called the Maryland Bridge, is made by gluing it to adjacent teeth. The artificial tooth, which is made to replace the missing tooth, is attached to the invisible back sides of the neighboring teeth. Adhesive substance is added by making the posterior surface of adjacent natural teeth rough. Both sides of the artificial tooth are fixed by passing these adhesive materials.

The aim is to make a bridge operation by preventing the cutting of healthy natural teeth.

It is not recommended to be applied to the back teeth in chewing duty as it is not very good in terms of adhesion and fixation. Even if it is applied, the usage time is quite short.
